Periodontal Disease And Heart Problems:
Mouth Is Not An Isolated System.Cardiovascular disease is a series of diseases that affect the heart and the blood vessels. They are leading cause of death worldwide. The diseases and conditions affecting the heart are collectively known as heart disease.
Patients who have gum problems are 25% more likely to develop cardiovascular disease. As gum problem severity increases, so does the probability of cardiovascular disease.
Individuals with gum problems are at increased risk:
a) 2.1 times for acute myocardial infarction (heart attack).
b) 4.3 times for stroke.
The prevention and treatment of periodontal disease reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease
One of the most common forms of heart disease is obstruction of heart arteries and it is theleading cause of heart attacks. The most common cause of such obstructions is a condition called atherosclerosis, a largely preventable type of disease. It can also lead to other heart problems, such as chest pain (angina) and heart attack (myocardial infarction). Cardiovascular disease caused by atheroesclerosis have been proven to be associated with periodontal disease(Gum disease). There is a direct association between an increased risk of atherosclerosis and the presence of gum pathogens(Gum Bacteria)
Mechanical biofilm control:
- Oral hygiene at home: brushing, interproximal hygiene, oral irrigation
- Supragingival tartar removal
- Subgingival scaling and root planning
- Periodontal surgery
The initial aim of treatment is to control the Infection to stop disease progression
